The road that led us to Torres del Paine

We were supposed to wake up around 5 a.m. and so we did. Well, almost. We thought we woke up but to be honest we just pretended to do so. Our minds tricked us as we decided to stay under the duvet a little longer. It was dark outside. And who likes to get up when it’s dark outside? The warmth of cozy bed kept us asleep until we heard a man yelling outside and someone knocking on our door. It was our driver and hostel owner trying to wake us up. I have no idea what time it was, but definitely it was late. Too late. It was too late not to jump out of bed like something had just bitten you on your ass. I have never dressed, had breakfast, brushed my teeth and packed backpack in so few minutes. I still don’t remember a lot from that morning. I hate to be in a hurry.
When we finally got outside sun was rising and gave the city of Puerto Natales colors that only nature can create. We hit the road. It was our last chance to quit. Just simply change our minds. But who quits before trying? A loser! We ain’t losers. We were far into the adventure to be in a sane state of mind that would let us think about turning back. The road to the end of the world – this is not a metaphor, the road is called ‘Ruta del Fin del Mundo’, google it, if you don’t believe me – was just as one could imagine by hearing its name. It was long. There was rarely a car passing by. Mountains that were surrounding us seemed to be within a hand’s reach but it was just an illusion. The longer we drove the more we realized it. Most of the time there was no reference points. No houses, no trees, no nothing. We did stop once along the way in the small town. I think our driver wanted to give us an opportunity to say goodbye to the civilization. (He probably needed to pee too.)
The wilderness was calling us many days before this trip begun, but now it was getting louder. Even the wind blowing in our faces and whistling in our ears couldn’t stop us from hearing the volume getting turned up more and more. Wilderness was calling us. All there was, was pure wide open space. An empty space, that was now getting filled up with our ideas, dreams, endless will to see more, know more, be more. Evolve. Somehow it all stick together. The unknown got me curious again. I could feel butterflies in my stomach being reborn. The stories that I read about Patagonia were true. It is magic. The road that led us to Torres del Paine was alluring.
